Why is Vale das Taquaras unique for bird-watchers?

The regions vast array of bird species make it a favorite with the foreign and the Brazilian birding community. Renowned ornithologist Helmut Sick visited Vale das Taquaras on several occasions in the 1980s, to watch the birds and help compile the bird list, as did Fernando Pacheco, who is today one of the finest ornithologists in Brazil.

Since we have had the property, the palm tree (jussara palm tree) has grown enormously and enriched the fauna. The property was bought in 1978 and in these 30 years the forest grew tall and rich. We planted many hard wood trees which had previously been removed to make houses for the local people and now the new trees are spreading their seeds. The ‘jussara’ palm tree which had been decimated for food have now an energetic growth since a new law was passed that no one can cut them. In this way, the bird life as well as the fauna around us has improved significantly.

Vale das Taquaras is only one and a half hours from the lowland birds of Requa Reserve (Guapi-Assu). If your trip allows it, plan to visit both Regua and Vale das Taquaras, for the perfect opportunity to take in both the lowland and the highland birds of the region!

Before you arrive there are 15m of dirt road, well kept, with hardly any stone, and the forest is all around us giving way to open, spectacular views of the mountain range. Very few cars will be driving through this road so if you want to bird watch on your way to the Lodge you might see the jewel hummingbird called Plovercrest or the Dusty-throated Hermit! What a beautiful birders experience.
